This weekend the clocks spring forward and British Summertime kicks in. That change gives us more time in the evenings to practice golf. Perhaps you haven’t dusted yours off but some have been playing through the gloomy months and practising on flood lit ranges. Those who have come to me for club changes recently have been consistent in seeing the same problems. I am working with some good players who are looking for greater consistency and the advice I am giving them is really helping.
The major problem I am seeing at the moment is driver length. In my club MOT programme I am finding drivers up to 46 inches long. On average, driver lengths should be 43-45 inches with the lower end being better. Unlike other clubs, your driver length is not fitted to you, you are not impacting the ground but playing off a tee at all times. ‘I play my driver off the deck’ some say. I always ask why when I can make you a 3 wood that will work far better and be far more consistent.
I am cutting drivers down by 1-2 inches for everyone at the moment. Loss of length is not a problem -increased straight driving is becoming a benefit. Why should this be? Well your hands are nearer the club head so you have more control. Now you have more control you gain more confidence.
So why has driver lengths been extending? Well its a con from the major manufaturers who are making you think that you can hit the ball further. This may be true but that further is under less control so you are spending more time in the rough off the tee. Add that to the other vagaries of commercial marking blinding you of the actual reality and before you know it, you have splashed out on an expensive driver which will be the cause of a diminishing game. At this point I should mention that a single figure handicap player now has a 43 inch driver with a 12 degree loft and has never driven the ball better. He is the case in point in making sure custom fitting solves your problems and guides you to the most efficent purchases. That is was www.custom-golf.co.uk is all about.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
